Bach nous apparaît aujourd’hui comme une figure majeure et incontestable de l’histoire de la musique. Imaginer qu’il ait pu souffrir de la comparaison avec ses contemporains semble invraisemblable ; et pourtant... Pour ce concert, Les Arts Florissants et Paul Agnew proposent une plongée dans l’univers musical de l’époque, en imaginant une « grande audition » visant à départager Bach et ses contemporains. Une reconstitution fictionnelle, cantates à l’appui... et un condensé de ce que l’Allemagne, en ce début de XVIIIe siècle, a de meilleur.
